Deven Kono

With over a decade of piano teaching experience, Deven Kono is a passionate teacher and an experienced performer. Beginning his piano studies with Ernest Chang at the age of four, Mr. Kono received his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Hawaii, where he studied under Ronald Morgan.  He has performed extensively throughout Hawaii, won numerous awards, scholarships, and competitions, and continues to perform actively as an accompanist.  His students have also won various awards and competitions, including the Honolulu Symphony’s Concerto Competition.

Michelle Lai

Michelle Lai has been an Ernest Chang Piano Studio Alumni since 2008 and an associate piano teacher since 2012. She received her Bachelor of Education degree in General Music Education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she studied piano with Dr. Jonathan Korth. In the past, she taught elementary music at Mid-Pacific Institute (student-taught), Linapuni Elementary School, Anuenue School, and Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus. She is Kodaly Level I & II certified and she currently teaches full-time music at Enchanted Lake Elementary School (Grades K-6).

Beverly Nagel

Beverly Nagel has been teaching with the Ernest Chang Piano Studio since 1989.  She received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Hawaii under the tutelage of Peter Coraggio.  In each lesson, Beverly hopes to instill the love of music in her students – stimulating their minds, touching their hearts, and tickling their imaginations.  She enjoys teaching everyone from the very young beginner, to adults of all levels, to the serious high school musician.  Classical, pop, rock, jazz – we’ll do it all!
